Tennis legend Rafael Nadal co-operated with Richard Mille to design the Richard Mille RM035 Rafael Nadal Americas—a limited edition of the manually-wound RM035, which premiered in 2011. Quickly iconic, the RM035 represented everything the luxury watch world loved (or loved to hate, depending on whether you were a traditionalist or someone who got excited by the enfant terrible of the horological world) about Richard Mille. Unique materials, a powerful-looking skeletonised movement, an overstated case size. The RM035 Americas Limited Edition made an already great watch even better.
The Richard Mille RM035 Rafael Nadal Americas was produced in 2015, in a run of just 50 luxury watches, and was only available in the Americas. It is powered by a skeletonised RMUL1 calibre, which is tested to Chronofiable standards, and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. (Chronofiable is a specific, rigorous test regime designed to determine a luxury watch's performance under extreme ageing conditions, which include subjecting the movement to 20,000 different shocks and large variations of temperature and humidity).
The movement has hour, minute, and seconds, and is set and wound using the heavily-protected bright-yellow crown. The crown protector shares this hue with the hour markers (round and baguette), which are treated with yellow Superluminova. The yellow creates a marked improvement in legibility from the original RM 035, and adds a dash of drama to the watch. The hour, minute, and second hands are tipped with red Superluminova: another legibility improvement. The original RM035 was treated with green lume for both hands and hour markers: given the small size of the markers, the lack of numerals, and the heavy skeletonisation of the watch, reading the time at night was not as easy as it could have been.
The Richard Mille RM035 Rafael Nadal Americas has a case diameter of 49.9 mm. The case is crafted from black TZP ceramic bezels and a NTPT carbon band, formed from hundreds of wafer-thin layers of compressed carbon. The caseback and crystal are sapphire glass. The rubber strap keeps the luxury watch firmly in place on Rafa's wrist, while giving his forearms plenty of flex and play.
The point of this luxury watch is simple: you can wear it on a tennis court, in the heat of a professional contest, without breaking it or adversely affecting your game. To this end, the Richard Mille RM035 Rafael Nadal Americas is extremely light and strong. The free sprung balance wheel, a mainstay of Richard Mille luxury watches, delivers greater accuracy despite the shocks experienced during a match. The movement's twin barrels also increase accuracy by minimising strain on moving elements and equalising torque over time.
Rafa Nadal's partnership with Richard Mille began with the RM027—a luxury sports watch that featured a tourbillon, and which Rafa actually wore during many tennis matches. A lot of which, he won. Richard Mille's mantra has always been 'R&D in the field', and with the RM027 the watchmaker added to its long list of impressive innovations designed in concert with the world's leading sports people.
The RM035 built on the success of the RM027, ditching the tourbillon in favour of greater accuracy (and coincidentally a greatly reduced, but still high-end, price). The Richard Mille RM035 Rafael Nadal Americas is the next logical step in the creation of luxury sport watches you can really play sports whilst wearing: a celebration of one of the brand's longest-running associations, and a lively update to an already famous timepiece.
